Donna Fain BIO

History of Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Donna is a native Houstonian who grew up in Sharpstown and graduated from Sharpstown High School.  She has a degree in Molecular Biology which led her to become a research scientist.  She is an antibody researcher who has created a few vaccines in her day.  Her research is the reason canine heartworm prevention was developed.  She is a mom and blessed with three children, a son and two daughters whom are all grown up.  However, still awaiting grandbabies.

Donna is a member of the Speakers Bureau for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.  She absolutely loves everything about the rodeo.  Go Texan Day was one of her favorite days as a kid.  She is extremely proud to belong to such a wonderful organization that gives so much back to its community, and helps almost 700 kids a year attend college. If you are at the rodeo, you may see Donna, because she is there every single day.

2023-02-15 00:00:00Z Feb 14, 2023 Barbara Crump Jones The dark history of the "Sugar Land 95" Feb 15, 2023

Barbara Crump Jones is a local historian who, along with Reginal Moore, was convinced Sugar Land’s soil hid a dark secret underneath a stretch of suburbia that resembles so much of the modern American landscape.

In February 2019, construction crews working for FBISD uncovered human remains in what proved to be an unmarked burial ground for 95 people.  They are thought to be African American prisoners aged 14 to 70 forced into backbreaking work on sugar plantations in a post-civil war system known as convict leasing that has been described as the continuation of slavery.

This discovery is referred to as the “Sugar Land 95”.

2023-03-08 00:00:00Z Mar 07, 2023 Terry Puhl (Houston Astros Hall of Fame) MLB Exp Mar 08, 2023

Longtime Astros outfielder Terry Puhl spent all but the final season of his 15-year Major League career with the Astros – topped only by fellow Astros Hall of Famers Craig Biggio (20) and Jeff Bagwell (15) for most seasons in an Astros uniform. During his tenure as an Astro, Puhl broke top 10 all-time in franchise history in multiple categories including games played, hits, doubles, triples and runs scored.

Offensively, Puhl was a model of consistency, hitting over .300 in three different seasons and .282 or higher nine times. In 1978, he was selected to the NL All-Star team.

Defensively, Puhl was one of the most sure-handed outfielders in the National League, committing just 18 errors in 1,300 career games. His .993 fielding pct. is the best among outfielders in Astros history and ranks 8th all-time among all outfielders in NL history. Puhl was also an effective base-stealer, tallying 217 steals in his career, swiping 30-or-more bags twice and 20-or-more six times.

Puhl pulled his own in the postseason as well, hitting what was at the time a record .526 (10x19) in the 1980 National League Championship Series vs. the Phillies. In his 13 career postseason games for Houston, Puhl hit a combined .372 (16x43), playing a significant role in the first three playoff appearances in franchise history (1980, 1981, 1986).

A native of Melville, Saskatchewan, Puhl was inducted into the Saskatchewan Sports Hall of Fame in 1994 and into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame in 1995. Terry retired from MLB in 1991, and served as head coach of the Univ. of Houston-Victoria baseball team form 2008 - 2021.

Terry and his wife Jackie, have lived in Sugar Land for over 30 years and they have three children and ? grandchildren.

Please join me in giving Terry Puhl a warm Sugar Land Rotary welcome.

2023-04-05 00:00:00Z Apr 04, 2023 Dr. Nicolle Byrd-Stephens Freedom from Sex Abuse Apr 05, 2023

Dr. Nicolle Byrd-Stephens has served communities notably as a change agent for more than three decades. She started as a student at Jack Yates High School as a peer counselor for Over the Hill recovery organization. She was featured in her first city-wide publication, the Houston Chronicle as a community leader through her church for the Nancy Reagan “Just Say No” initiatives. She was later published in multiple publications including the LaVida News Weekly as “Citizen of the Week”. She also received honorary commendations from Houston Mayors for impacting the lives of Katrina and Harvey victims.

Her credentials are numerous which include multiple degrees, graduating as Summa Cum Laude with honors and valedictorian for both her masters and doctoral. She also has received numerous certifications including Victim and Crisis Chaplaincy with Psychological First aid, serving with Law Enforcement to help manage family trauma from death notifications relating to victims, Youth Protection Training (Boy Scouts of America), Stewards of Children Authorized Facilitator (Darkness 2 Light) and most importantly, she is a Credible Messenger due to her life experience as a Survivor Thriver of child sexual abuse, domestic abuse, attempted suicides, homelessness, living in a crack house and mother of a murdered son.

Despite life’s challenges, Dr. Nicolle’s work has always selflessly extended beyond her, so that she could equip and advocate for the health and wholeness of the voiceless, broken, discouraged and disenfranchised. She knows too well the trauma of sexual abuse as a child and adult and the dreadful, dead-end roads, left unresolved, the suppressed pain can lead to. However, she is very well known to the grace of God and the possible reality of living a healthy and whole life, free of the trauma traps that hinder true liberty, peace and mental stability.

As CEO and Founder of Resuscitate Inc., Dr. Nicolle is humbly, yet intentionally committed to providing prevention and awareness tools that can help mitigate the risks of any child ever experiencing sexual abuse and preserving future generations from ever needing intervention. Ultimately, her vision is to expand Resuscitate Inc to an international table that will address the cause of protection for children and healing for survivors glocally: international with a local touch.

She’s reminded daily that she is blessed to still be here because as she states, “My Presence Has Purpose and My Purpose Has Power”. Child Sexual Abuse is 100% Preventable and we all have a role to play towards its extinction.
